50 years of AI E-mail
Monday, 16 January 2006
Hurray! This year Artificial Intelligence celebrates its 50th anniversary. During a conference at Dartmouth College for computer specialists in 1956, AI pioneer John McCarthy first dropped the term. This extended brainstorming session lasted a month and shaped AI as we know it today.

Blockbuster prediction E-mail
Tuesday, 20 December 2005

While music excecutives already use a similar application to determine which artists to sign to their label, the same thing is now also available for movies. Information scientist Ramesh Sharda trained a neural network to determine if a movie will be successful or not. To do this, the network takes 7 key parameters into account, such as the "star value" of the cast and the degree of special effects used. Let's cross our fingers and hope that next year Hollywood will turn out less crap using this test than this year.

Improved QRIO E-mail
Tuesday, 20 December 2005

Last week I reported about the improved Asimo robot by Honda. Well, it seems that the good people at Sony have also managed to step up their game with an improved version of the cute QRIO. Last week it gave a performance at a Tokyo exhibition, where it demonstrated its dancing skills and its ability to stack boxes. But the main new feature is an extra camera on top of its head that allows it to see several people at once and focus in on one of them, allowing for a more personal interaction. Want to see the old QRIO dancing and running? Check that out here.

As you may have noticed, I added a chatbot yesterday to answer questions about this website. But ... it has to be trained. If you have suggestions for the training, please contact me by using the contact button in the left menu. If you want to create your own chatbot, click here.

Unmanned shuttle buses crash E-mail
Thursday, 08 December 2005

It is back to the drawing board for the people of Frog navigation system. Just days after the Parkshuttle application was opened by the Dutch PM, two of the buses crashed into each other. Hopes were high for this new unmanned, derailed and supposedly intelligent form of transportation. Fortunately, the buses were empty when they crashed and nobody was hurt.

Automated document layout with genetic algorithms E-mail
Thursday, 08 December 2005

Is DTP becoming something of the past? At Xerox they have developed a way of automating your document layout using genetic algorithms (a personal favorite of mine). You can find the paper here.

Super toys E-mail
Thursday, 08 December 2005
Still some christmas shopping to do? Why not opt for one of these toys? Take a look at the Robosapien v2, the Amazing Amanda doll or the or the i-dog. But as intelligent toys gain in popularity, some experts in childhood development raise concerns.

NASAs Robo Space Challenge E-mail
Monday, 05 December 2005

As an effort to stimulate advances in research and use of robots in space missions, NASA has announced two new competions in the field of robotics in 2007. The exact rules for the competition have not been finalized yet, but in one challenge robots will be required to autonomically build complicated structures out of building blocks strewn around an arena. The other challenge is to build a auto-piloted plane that is able to carry out a complicated flight path. The conditions of actual planetary exploration will simulated during the competition. The prize money in both challenges will be $250.000.
